Clean Air Running with Otrivine

Running is a great way to support your health and wellbeing. However, when you run you breathe faster, which means you are breathing in more air than usual and therefore more of the pollution that might be present in the air. This can affect both your performance and your health.
The good news is there are lots of small changes and simple actions you can take to help you breathe cleaner so that you can enjoy your run and can help protect your wellbeing.
Did you know? Air quality changes due to local conditions such as the weather, the time of day, the amount of traffic and even the type of buildings.
Otrivine is on a mission to change how runners think about the air they breathe. To help runners take action, Otrivine is raising awareness of the 9 Actions to Breathe Cleaner - easy steps runners can take to reduce their exposure to air pollution.
Discover the following Otrivine Actions to Breathe Cleaner for helping runners breathe cleaner air:
Prepare your nose
Pre run for better breathing and natural filtration. Your nose plays an important role in filtering, warming, and humidifying the air you breathe before it enters the lungs. To help your nose to work at its best, wash it with saline solution.
Check the weather
Avoid exercise on hot days and instead run after it rains or on windy days when air quality is generally better.
Avoid rush hour
Running to and from work might not be the best option, lunch time, early morning or late evening runs are generally better.
Avoid tall buildings
Avoid running near tall buildings as they can trap pollution, especially if there are high buildings on both sides of the road.
Pick your route
Find a clean air running route ideally in green spaces but you can also incorporate low traffic road routes.
Switch to nose breathing
When you exercise you are more likely to breathe through your mouth than your nose, however, your nose can filter out large pollutants to help stop them from entering your lungs. Therefore, when you are running in high polluted areas, such as near stationary traffic, try to switch to nose breathing.
Keep your distance from the road
Air pollution levels are higher on busy roads. If you can’t completely avoid busy roads on your running route then aim to stay 1-2 m from the traffic as even just this small distance will mean you are exposed to less air pollution.
Avoid running behind vehicles
If you are directly behind a moving vehicle, for example where traffic is congested and slower moving, you will be exposed to very high levels of pollution. Try to move to a different route as soon as possible or walk to slow your breathing rate.
Check air quality forecast
Some areas, but not all, now have air quality monitoring to allow you to check air pollution levels before you run.
