Update on ESAA decision around Age Groups

England Athletics can share the following update regarding the English Schools’ Athletics Association’s (ESAA) current position of deciding against the implementation of the new age groups in its competitions effective from 1 April 2026.

The decision to change the age groups for competition in the sport UK wide was made by the UKA Board in late 2023. England Athletics, in partnership with the other HCAFs, has supported and advocated these changes as part of a wider need to help modernise the sport and to provide an improved developmental pathway to retain athletes in their teenage years, particularly when young athletes are at the top of their age group when undertaking GCSE and A-Level examinations.

As a long-standing funding partner of the ESAA, England Athletics firmly believes that having all competitions governed by the same rules, and using consistent implements and technical specifications, best serves the interests of athletes, parents, and coaches throughout the UK. England Athletics has clearly communicated its position to ESAA officials and has maintained ongoing, constructive dialogue about a timeline for introducing these changes within schools’ competitions over recent months.

We will continue to work with the ESAA through this period providing support with practical solutions and guidance as they continue their discussions at committee level and in consultation with its county schools’ network, stakeholders, and partners. We expect to be able to provide a further update in October.
