Officials are often the first point of contact for questions on event day. Clear and consistent communication will be essential, especially during:
- Equipment checks
- Call-up procedures
- Clarification of event restrictions for particular age groups
Ensuring everyone understands the new rules will reduce confusion and help competitions run efficiently.
🤝 Engage with drop‑in sessions and FAQs
England Athletics are continuing to provide drop‑in sessions and updated FAQs to support all stakeholders, including officials, through the transition. These sessions help clarify:
- Practical implementation questions
- Feedback from across the sport that may inform updates
Officials are encouraged to attend these sessions and keep up to date with the evolving guidance, with two coming up at 6-7pm on the below dates - you can also watch back any of our previous sessions.

With many athletes moving into new categories, this is a period of adjustment. Officials play a crucial role in:
- Creating a welcoming environment
- Ensuring events are delivered fairly and safely
- Helping young athletes understand their responsibilities within the new rules
A supportive approach will help promote retention and enjoyment across the sport - one of the key aims of the age group changes.
📧 Keep an eye out for updates
The UKA rulebook for competition will be updated shortly ensure confident and accurate rule application from April 2026 by checking our age group changes webpages when this is published - we'll also be in touch by email to those opted into e-communications, to notify officials.
The objectives of the changes are to:
- Simplify age group dates for all disciplines
- Support athletes in their long-term development
- Retain and recruit more young people in athletics
- Provide a clear, simplified pathway for all areas of the sport, from U10s to Seniors
- Provide better gradual progression for all athletics events
- And in creating an additional age group, better support age and stage appropriate competition formats and events
It’s important to point out that the age group changes alone are not viewed as the sole answer to the challenges we face as a sport in retaining and recruiting athletes and are part of a wider approach to arresting participation decline and increasing the number of young people engaged in track and field particularly.
