The Coastal Striders – breaking down barriers through running
For many people, joining a sports club can be the first step towards improving their physical and mental wellbeing. At Coastal Striders, an England Athletics affiliated club based in Ramsgate, Kent, the focus is on making that first step as accessible as possible.
Established as a friendly and inclusive club, Coastal Striders welcomes runners of all ages, abilities and experience levels. From complete beginners and those returning to exercise, to more experienced runners, the club provides a supportive environment where members can progress at their own pace.
Making running accessible for all
One of the club’s most distinctive features is its commitment to removing financial barriers to participation. Membership is completely free, reflecting the clubs belief that cost should not prevent someone from accessing the benefits of physical activity and community sport.
The Club Welfare Officer, Brian Veaney, says the club’s success is built on a culture of inclusion:
“We are very much about running together and ensuring nobody gets left behind. Whether someone’s goal is completing their first 5K, improving their fitness, meeting new people or simply getting out of the house, everyone has a place within Coastal Striders.”
The club's approach has helped create an environment where participation is valued above performance, enabling members from a range of backgrounds and abilities to feel welcome.
“Membership is completely free because we believe cost should never be a barrier to being active or becoming part of a running community. We welcome complete beginners, people returning to exercise, those who prefer a run/walk approach and more experienced runners. Our sessions cater for different abilities and paces, with a strong focus on making sure everyone feels comfortable, supported and included.”
Supporting mental health and wellbeing

Alongside supporting physical activity, the club places a strong emphasis on mental health and wellbeing. Coastal Striders has two Mental Health Champions who provide an approachable point of contact for members who may need support. The club recognises that for many members, the opportunity to connect with others can be just as important as the physical activity itself. For Brian, the benefits of being part of the club extend far beyond running itself.

Building a strong community

Running sessions are complemented by a range of social activities that help members stay connected both in and out of the sport. From post-run breakfasts and coffee stops to fish and chip runs, pizza nights and social gatherings throughout the year, the club works hard to foster a sense of community.
"Running brings us together, but friendship, inclusion and wellbeing are at the heart of the club. We regularly enjoy tea and cake, breakfasts after a Sunday morning run and social events that help everyone stay connected, including members who are temporarily unable to run."
This strong sense of belonging has become a key part of the club's identity and helps ensure everyone feels valued and supported.
Powered by volunteers
The club is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, committee members and run leaders who give their time to support members and ensure the club continues to thrive.
Coastal Striders also organises the annual Coastbuster 10 Mile and 10K, with event proceeds reinvested into the club to support initiatives such as training opportunities, defibrillators and other resources for members.
The volunteer-led model has helped create a sustainable and welcoming environment that continues to support runners across the local community.
"We are proud to offer a free, welcoming and non-judgemental club where people can improve their physical fitness, build friendships and support their mental wellbeing."
