Sub-10 Fearon to head England Athletics Team at Manchester International
Joel Fearon will run his first race since clocking 9.96sec to win the England Athletics title when he competes in the inaugural Manchester International on 17 August.
The Birchfield Harrier and international bobsledder sped to joint third place on the British all-time list for 100m when taking the gold medal at Bedford. He will be looking to continue his winning ways as part of the England team who will compete against opposition including Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and a Great Britain Under 20 team.
Fearon, who is coached by Michael Khmel, said, “I am very happy to be running for England as it is not often you get to represent your country and compete at this level. I am very glad to be able to run.
“I’ll be looking to get maximum points for my country and to run fast. It is going to be a nice occasion, I know I’ll have very good support from my team and I’m going to go out there and enjoy myself.”
The England team sees many of the athletes who claimed national titles in the England Athletics AAA & UK CAU Senior Championships in action. Among these are Dan Gardiner (Club: Sheffield & Dearne, Coach: Mike Stayman) who leapt out to 7.96 in the long jump and Jess Judd (Club: Chelmsford, Coach: George Gandy / Mick Judd) who took the 1500m title in impressive front running style.
England Athletics Head of Coaching and Athlete Development Martin Rush said, “Any sporting international between home countries generates a tremendous buzz.
"We saw many athletes perform at a high level in the England Athletics championships to gain their selection with Joel’s performance particularly eye catching. We are delighted that we can offer our athletes this opportunity to represent their country. We know our athletes will relish the competitive opportunity and that the other teams will be giving us a great competition. We would like to thank Manchester City Council for their support in the hosting of this event.”
As well as home country and British Junior teams, also competing in the match will be the UK Armed Forces and a combined British Athletics League and UK Women’s League.
