School athletics led me to becoming an official as a parent
Paj Valley has always loved athletics, a sport he first competed in during school. His favourite events were sprinting, high jump and javelin. While Paj explored other sports, he was eventually drawn back into athletics through his son, who also developed a love for the sport and continue to compete.
Paj's return to the athletics scene quickly led to him being asked to assist at events. He told us; "then some officials suggested that I had so much experience that I should consider the formal England Athletics officiating pathway. The rest is history!"
Favourite part of being an official?
For Paj, the most rewarding part of officiating at grassroots level is witnessing the sheer joy on children’s faces as they compete, give their best, and cultivate a genuine love for the sport.
"It is not always about winning medals, it’s about social cohesion and engagement. Trying their best and obtaining some fulfilment and enjoyment through it."

County Officials' Secretaries - helping colleagues develop
Paj is one of approximately 60 County Officials' Secretaries (COfSecs) across England. In Worcestershire, he works alongside an Endurance COfSec, supporting track and field officials. His responsibilities include:
"Making sure that officials are reminded if they need to renew their licence, or update their DBS or H&S requirements. I also use it to encourage officials to think about the next progression stage or level."
The role also allows him to share vital information from England Athletics and rally support for competition events, even extending help to other counties when needed.
We asked Paj what his favourite parts of the COfSec role are, he told us;
"Keeping a track of our community of Technical Officials, encouraging them to move forwards on the journey of officiating if that is what they want to do."
"Trying to grow the numbers in the County so that we can think about succession planning, growth and resilience of this volunteer role."

Advice for officials wishing to progress
Finally, we asked Paj what advice he’d offer to officials looking to develop and progress, Paj shared some valuable insights:
"I would say, do not be frightened to ask for advice or assistance. Most officials are keen to disseminate their expertise and knowledge. Look out for training opportunities, even if it is online courses. Try to seek opportunities to shadow experienced officials, and lastly see if anybody would act as a mentor for you. The journey can be a very enjoyable and fulfilling one that provides great benefit to our communities."
Paj Valley's dedication demonstrates the spirit of officiating in athletics – a commitment born from a love for the sport and a desire to see others thrive. His journey, from competitor to County Officials' Secretary, highlights the invaluable contribution volunteers make to the grassroots of our sport. By encouraging new officials and nurturing existing talent, Paj and his fellow COfSecs are building a stronger, more resilient future for athletics in England.
