Robbie Fitzgibbon: 1996-2024
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of GB & NI 1500m athlete Robbie Fitzgibbon at the age of 28.
A former English Schools' 1500m champion, he represented GB & NI both as a junior and a senior athlete. As a junior, he was fifth in the 1500m final at the European Championships hosted in Sweden in 2015. In 2019, Robbie represented his nation on British soil at the European Indoors in Glasgow where he made it through to the final.
A keen clubman, Robbie has been a loyal member of Brighton Phoenix whether as a competitive athlete or supporter to his teammates. His club paid a fitting tribute:
"A friend to many, and a source of motivation for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Robbie was the epitome of a runner’s runner, embodying everything we value at Phoenix."
Robbie had spoken openly about his mental health challenges in recent years, and was training to run the Brighton Marathon in 2025 in aid of the charity Mind. Robbie’s father, Robin, will now be running the 2025 Brighton Marathon in place of Robbie.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of Robbie's passing and send out our most sincere condolences to all of Robbie's family, friends and teammates at Brighton Phoenix. It is tragic to hear the passing of someone so young especially who had made and was continuing to make such an impact on our sport."
"From his friends and family, club and competitors, tributes have been pouring in from across the sport, showing what an outstanding athlete and person he was."
