Remembering Ernie Cripps: 1926–2026

Everyone at England Athletics is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ernie Cripps at the age of 100.

Ernie devoted more than 70 years of his life to athletics, leaving an extraordinary legacy through his work as a volunteer, official, administrator and supporter of grassroots sport across Derbyshire and the East Midlands.

A lifelong stalwart of Derby Athletic Club, Ernie held numerous club and county roles throughout his involvement in the sport. Beginning through his work with Rolls-Royce Harriers in the 1960s, he helped organise athletics opportunities for local athletes and worked tirelessly to develop participation at every level.

As an official, Ernie qualified as a timekeeper before progressing to become a Level 2 field judge, Level 4 endurance official and event adjudicator. He became a familiar and trusted figure at athletics events across the region, always willing to share his knowledge and support the next generation of volunteers and officials.

His contribution extended far beyond officiating. Ernie played a leading role in promoting local athletics events, including BBC Blue Peter Fun Runs, and was heavily involved in the organisation of the Derby Ramathon, helping to create opportunities for runners and communities across Derbyshire.

In recognition of his remarkable service, Ernie received the East Midlands Inspiring Official Award at the England Athletics Regional Volunteer Awards in 2022 and was later presented with a special award marking more than 70 years of service to the sport. Even into his 100th year, he remained actively involved with Derby Athletic Club, continuing to support club activities and inspire those around him.

When asked why he had continued volunteering for so many years, Ernie's response reflected the philosophy that defined his life in athletics: "I've enjoyed it. Keep going if you enjoy it."

His dedication, generosity and unwavering enthusiasm embodied the very best of our sport. Ernie's contribution to athletics will be remembered for many years to come, and he leaves behind a lasting legacy across clubs, competitions and communities throughout the East Midlands and beyond.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Ernie's family, friends and everyone at Derby Athletic Club at this difficult time.
