Podcast #70: Two-time Commonwealth medallist Jade Lally reflects on discus career
In the latest episode of the England Athletics Podcast, two-time Commonwealth medallist Jade Lally reflects on her career following her retirement from discus throwing.
Lally won silver at Birmingham 2022 and bronze at Glasgow 2014 with Team England, competing at four Commonwealth Games in total.
The nine-time UK champion is also the English record holder with a best throw of 65.10m, achieved the same year she reached the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
"It's still strange telling people I'm retired," Lally tells host Alex Seftel.
"I'm enjoying retirement in that I don't miss the pressures of training and constantly meeting my own high expectations. But I miss the structure of it."
In a wide-ranging, honest discussion, she talks about her job as a personal trainer and coach, her foray into indoor rowing in Australia, and the challenges associated with returning to the sport after becoming a mum.
"People did compare me to Jess [Ennis-Hill] a lot and Serena Williams...they are not like-for-like comparisons," says Lally.
"Lots of research [has been] done on running and just general joggers, but not elite athletes in power events."
The episode can be listened to in full on Spotify, as well as Soundcloud and Apple Podcasts.
