Pat Green: 1931-2025
England Athletics is saddened to hear of the passing of Pat Green, former chair of North of England AA and life vice-president of the AAA of England, aged 93.
Pat was a prominent official, and will be remembered fondly by athletes, coaches, and officials alike.
She was also formerly chair of the UKA Junior Commission which ran the GB junior teams and headed up many World and European teams.
Originally a member of Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton Harriers & AC, and latterly Liverpool Harriers & AC and Merseyside County AA, Pat was incredibly well thought of not only locally but on a national scale.
Pat was also the women’s referee at the Great North Run and London Marathon, a highly regarded National Field Official, Endurance Official away from track and field, and was regarded as a mentor to many other officials.
Pat passed away on 3 August at a residential home aged 93, where she had lived for the last five years since the passing of her husband, Jim.
Dean Williams, one of Pat's fellow officials on Merseyside, said:
"I remember Pat as a field judge when I was a javelin thrower, particularly when she used to give me red flags for flat landings! In later years, I recall her being busy helping out down at the clubhouse (at Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton Harriers & Athletics Club) doing all kinds of jobs at home fixtures. She would sometimes bring a programme to show me from one of the meetings she had been at over the years, often recalling her experiences or issues that had arisen, plus of course giving her opinion and, occasionally asking mine!
"Her experience as a referee was always very beneficial. She was a very experienced official and had a wealth of knowledge to tap into from her International officiating and GB junior team managing days. She was also heavily involved on many boards, commissions and committees.
"Something personal to me, was, as an early career National Level Official, I remember on one occasion having an unsettling and upsetting experience at a competition, to the extent I was considering giving up as an official. Who was the first person to ring me when I got home? Pat of course, giving me reassurance, the benefit of her wisdom and the confidence to help me to carry on. That was just Pat though, a lovely, considerate and friendly lady and a great official who will be very much missed."
Pat’s funeral will be held on 20 August at 12 noon at Widnes Crematorium, then on to Cronton Village Holy Family Club. Wearing black is optional, but attendees are requested to wear red.
