Major renovation work completed at Tooting Bec Athletics Track

Tooting Bec Athletics Track reopened its doors earlier this month after a £500,000 renovation project.

Home of Herne Hill Harriers Athletics Club, the track is a major community hub that caters to schools, sports clubs and athletes from across the local borough and beyond.

The refurbishment of the track began this year alongside upgrades to the gym and changing facilities, and was reopened ahead of the summer season for schools and local athletes.

Chris Mallender, Senior Club Support Manager with England Athletics, says:

“The track at Tooting Bec is one of the most strategically important track and field facilities in the country. Herne Hill Harriers led the way with a dedicated campaign to get the facility fully upgraded after 35 years and the partnership between club, council and facility operator is one that we hope to see replicated up and down the country to safeguard and improve our existing facility stock.“

Speaking at the reopening of the track, Chair of London Council Adrian Day said:

"Of course with track and field you have to have facilities to a very good standard. So it really is fantastic to be here and see this new track […] Credit to the council for listening, responding and putting this wonderful track in place."
