Ian Mahoney: 1970-2024

England Athletics is sad to hear of the passing on 6 January 2024 of Newham & Essex Beagles Life Member Ian Mahoney after a deterioration in his long term disability at the age of 53.

In younger life Ian was a distance runner who competed for the Newham & Essex Beagles team in Summer and Winter. He had a degenerative condition that eventually led to him using a wheelchair. He did not let this prevent his continuing participation in the sport and he was active as a coach and sports masseur as well as continuing to compete.

Ian also participated as a volunteer for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
