Getting started on the officiating pathway: John Armour's journey
John Armour's journey as a Starter began, as it often does for many, with a personal connection: his son was competing. Having already volunteered in a number of other sports, John was no stranger to giving his time. So, when his local athletics club put out a call for additional volunteers, he quickly mentioned that he had already completed his Starter / Starter's Assistant Level 1 course. This initial step proved to be the gateway into his officiating journey.
John had support from his club which allowed him to build his confidence and set him on the path to becoming a qualified official:
"I was supported by my club to move forward and this has given me a great opportunity to learn and grow."
Support every step of the way
Now a Level 2 official, John is far from finished with his officiating journey. He's keen to continue progressing through the ranks, with the ultimate goal of officiating on the start line of an international event.
"Taking that step up to Level 2 is a bit daunting, I still know I have so much more to learn, but the officials' pathway, England Athletics modules and countless other experienced officials are always there to support and guide."

Beyond the technical aspects, John enjoys the personal interaction with athletes. He finds great joy in helping the younger age groups understand the starting process, ensuring they feel as comfortable as possible and can perform their best.
"In a recent event we had an U11 race. I took the time to explain some of the rules and making the young people feel at ease, with a little joke thrown in. I had a parent come up to me and thank me for making his child a little less nervous. It’s the small things that really make it all worth it."
Building connections and giving back
As well as meeting many new members of the officiating community and forging new friendships, John has found a unique joy in seeing familiar faces. "Seeing their progress and progression always makes me smile," he shares, highlighting the fantastic bond that can develop between officials and athletes over time.
John's experience echoes what many officials discover - the feeling of giving back to both the running community and the wider community. This act can significantly improve a person's physical and mental wellbeing. He also told us that, without exception, all the officials he has met have allowed for a welcoming and collaborative environment.
"I have met some great people in my journey in the officiating community, all have been extremely friendly and approachable. The feeling of giving back to the running community and the wider community has been of a real advantage to my wellbeing, both physical and mental."
When asked what advice he would give to someone contemplating joining the officiating community, John told us:
"Just give it go, you never know you may be a part of the future of an Olympic gold medal winner."
John's story is a great reminder that becoming an athletics official offers so much more than just a role; it's an opportunity for personal growth, community connection, and the chance to directly shape the experiences of athletes.
If you're inspired by John's journey and are looking for a rewarding way to contribute to the sport, consider taking that first step onto the Officials' Pathway. Your journey could be the next success story in England Athletics.
