England team announced for Växjö 2023

We are pleased to announce the England team for this weekend’s 2023 Växjö Indoor Throwing competition in Sweden.

Representing the Red Roses for the trip is a 20-strong squad featuring a mixture of athletes across different age groups and programmes along our England Athletics Talent Pathway.

There are call-ups for 2022 under 18 European champion Cleo Agyepong, 2022 under 20 World finalist Michael Allison, fresh from a PB in excess of the European under 20 qualification standard 70.45m at the UK Winter Long Championships, 2021 under 20 European finalist Taia Tunstall, 2022 under 18 European finalist Isaac Delaney, 2022 under 18 European competitor Ayesha Jones, fresh from a SB in excess of the Commonwealth Youth Games qualification standard 49.81m at the UK Winter Long Championships, and Chuk Osammor, with a SB in excess of the European under 23 qualification standard of 58.82m at the UK Winter Long Championships.

All the selected athletes for the meet in Sweden this Saturday 4 March are focused on competing in a busy year of athletics in 2023.

Developing and supporting the country’s high-performing athletes across all ages, event groups, and disciplines is one of the key focus areas of the England Athletics strategy through to 2032.

Nick Ridgeon, England Athletics Event Group Lead for Throws, who will be joined at the event by Team Manager Phoebe White, coaches Tom Dobbing and James Taylor, and physiotherapist Lucy Eggleton, said:

“Congratulations to all of the selected throwers, their personal coaches and support teams. The team is comprised of throwers hoping to be selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games, as well as the European under 20 and under 23 championships this summer.

“We have a really strong team who will be hoping to perform well in what is an exciting, inspirational and extraordinary event. The competition which sees javelin and discus being contested indoors alongside the more typical shot put is a rare type of competition. It’s really important we provide international competitions and learning opportunities like this for our pathway throwers as the experiences they have as part of teams like this should hopefully give them the knowledge, skills and experience to perform in future age group and senior major championships.

“I also feel it’s important for personal coaches and administrators working within the talent pathway to get an opportunity to develop themselves by taking on roles as selectors, team coaches and team managers and I’d like to thank James Taylor, Tom Dobbing, and Phoebe White for the great work they are doing.”
