England take Girls' title at ISF World Schools Championships in Croatia
The English Schools' AA selected a very strong U18 team to compete at the ISF Jean Humbert Cup in Croatia. Split hosted almost 500 young athletes from 29 countries from all over the world.
The competition has an unusual format, in that a team of six athletes must between them cover nine events, across five event disciplines (Sprints, Hurdles, Middle Distance, Jumps, Throws). As a minimum, each discipline must have an athlete recording a performance, and beyond that four further performances can score, relying on athletes offering a second event. Performances are judged against a scoring table, not unlike a decathlon or heptathlon, or indeed the ESAA Track and Field cup.
The Boys and Girls' relay teams took 3rd and 2nd respctively, and six individuals won their events spanning a number of disciplines; Mia Chantree (high jump), Pedro Gleadall (javelin), Jasmine Jolly (300m hurdles), Dominic Ogbechie (long jump), Serena Vincent (shot put) and Emily Williams (800m). In addition, there were 2nd places for Raphael Bouju for the long jump and Dominic Ogbechie in the 200m. And with points so important in the overall result, important results also included Jenna Blundell coming 3rd in both the 100m hurdles and the long jump, and Jack Higgins was 3rd placed in the 800m.
England won the overall Girls' cup, and came second in the Boys' by just 8 points.
ESAA Team Managers were Anne Francis and Ian Roberts, and ESAA International Team Captains were Emily Williams and Joshua Douglas
The ISF world schools' Track and Field Cup also has competitions for the outstanding school teams, and England was represented by Coopers Company and Coburn School, Essex, and Hitchin Boys’ School, Hertfordshire in the Girls’ and Boys’ competitions respectively. These outstanding teams were selected as a consequence of their achievements in the ESAA Track and Field cup. Coopers Company and Coburn School finished 6th behind Sportgymnasium Magdeburg, Germany, and Hitchin Boys’ School finished 13th, behind Trinity Grammar School, Australia.
