New Appointment Announcement

We’re delighted to announce the appointment of two new Event Leads joining our Competitions Team. Welcome to England Athletics:

  • Shani Palmer – Event Lead for Speed
  • Darren Ritchie – Event Lead for Jumps and Combined Events

Shani brings an exciting perspective and innovative ideas to the role, as well as experience in project management and organisation; and will be a key part of the team as we look to develop the talent programmes to support our clubs and coaches.

Speaking about her appointment and new role, Shani said: ‘I’m delighted to be joining England Athletics and I look forward to continuing the great work that has been done to help develop our athletes and coaches with the Speed Team. Athletics has been a central part of my life for over 34 years, first as an international athlete and now as a coach. I’m excited to be able to combine my experience as an Olympian, Commonwealth bronze medallist and Event Manager, together with my passion for athletics in this role. With the Commonwealth Games just over 32 months away, now is the time to drive forward our objectives from grass roots participation right through to competition on the global stage.’

Darren represented Great Britain & NI and Scotland at European and Commonwealth level respectively, where he was three times British Long Jump Champion, and he currently holds the Scottish National Outdoor Record with 8.01m. He followed this success with a number of roles with Scottish Athletics, including National Event Manager for Jumps and Combined Events and Head of Coach Development, where he led Coach Education, Development, Welfare and Athlete Health and Wellbeing.

Darren will start his role with the England Senior & U20 Indoor Combined Events Championships, incorporating BMC and 3km Walk, in Sheffield on 4-5 January. Online entries close on Monday 16 December click this link to enter.

Speaking about his appointment and new role, Darren said: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to be working with England Athletics and look forward to the opportunity to work with the jumps and combined events coaching community; strengthening existing coaching relationships and developing new connections. There is huge talent potential in the jumps and combined events, and I’m really excited to be working with, and creating development opportunities for, athletes and coaches throughout the talent development pathway. As Team England prepares to host a home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, this is a great time to be working with coaches and athletes in developing the participation and performance levels of the event group.’
