England Athletics Officials' Survey: results

Many thanks to all the officials who completed the England Athletics Officials Survey carried out during March and April of this year.

644 qualified officials completed the survey with just over half having officiated for less than 10 years.

We are very grateful for the time all respondents took to complete the survey, with all comments and data being reviewed and adopted into all future workstreams and projects by England Athletics.

Each step of the journey forward will involve collaboration and engagement with the officiating community at all levels of the structure as required.

Summary of findings

  • 82% of officials find officiating rewarding
  • 78% of officials rating their experiences as either Excellent or Good
  • 42% were likely to recommend officiating.
  • 35% say progressing up the official’s pathway is important to them and 23% said it was not important
  • 23% of officials say it clear how to progress up the pathway, 45% say it is not clear.
  • 79% of officials feel supported by competition organisers and 60% by England Athletics.

Summary of respondees

644 qualified officials completed the survey.

  • 71% were aged 55 or over
  • 62% were male
  • 20% were qualified at Level 1, 30% at Level 2, 26% at Level 3 and 24% at Level 4
  • The average number of meetings per year for an official is 24.
