England Athletics CEO and junior England international present medals at Bury AC’s final Mini League meeting

England Athletics CEO Chris Jones and regional Club Support Manager Sarah Friday visited Bury Athletics Club recently as the club hosted the fourth and final of its Mini League meetings.

Jay Cook, a junior England international athlete from Bury AC, was also there to present medals to the youngsters.

Almost 100 athletes were in attendance to enjoy the event, with spectators treated to some exciting track and field action.

Bury AC club president, Jean Simpson MBE, established the competition several years ago to provide an introduction to competitive athletics for children in the under-nine, U11 and U13 age groups.

Coaches Helen Vaughan and Fiona Healy now organise the Mini League meetings, with other clubs such as Preston Harriers, Leigh Harriers, Salford Metropolitan AC, Salford Harriers, Blackley AC and Bolton Harriers also attending to compete.

The programme included two sprint events, the 80m and the 150m, and a middle-distance event, 800m for U13s and 600m for the other age groups. There were also long jump and javelin competitions.

England Athletics CEO Chris Jones said:

“It was fantastic to join forward-thinking volunteers at Bury AC for a wonderful evening of junior athletics. Our sport is fundamental to providing a healthy physically literate lifestyle and long term involvement in sport, and it is really important that the introduction to our sport for our youngest participants is fun, enjoyable, and developmental.

This was clearly evident during the evening, and it was a great atmosphere too. I was honoured to be asked to present some medals to the hard-working young athletes and also to talk with the selfless hard-working officials who have served our sport so well for a long time.”
