DNA competition coming to the School Games

For the very first time, the School Games National Finals (4-5 September) will be held in the short-programme DNA format.

Late summer, regional teams from across the Home Countries will compete in this relatively new structure which has become very popular amongst clubs across Europe.

The School Games National Finals will come with extra excitement, as it will be the first time DNA has been used for youth level competition in the UK. Some English clubs such as Blackheath and Bromley Harriers AC have had great DNA success, having competed in Portugal in 2025.

What is the School Games?

Since 2006, the School Games National Finals have provided the perfect opportunity for young athletes to experience a mini multi-sport games, spectate other events, stay in fantastic team accommodation at Loughborough University and compete as part of a wider team.

The School Games National Finals has seen many of its athletes go on to achieve the highest sporting accolades and success on national and international stages with just some of the stars including Olympic and Paralympic heroes, Jonnie Peacock, Morgan Lake and Hannah Cockroft.

All about the DNA

Developed by European Athletics, DNA competitions are fast-paced and dynamic, taking place over 2.5 hours. Built with both the athlete and spectator experience in mind, the tagline 'Athletics with Attitude' showcases how European Athletics are taking a leap forward.

Athletes will compete as part of regional teams, taking part in a variety of different track and field events. The shorter timetable and team point scoring system makes the competition all to play for right down to the final relay. 12 points will be up for grabs for first place in each event, with the points reducing all the way to six.
