CEO Chris Jones returns to HAWCS Athletics Club

Celebrating their tenth birthday this year, HAWCS Athletics Club have gone from strength to strength throughout the last decade. Based in Ware, Hertfordshire, the club caters for athletes of all abilities from age 10 to masters.

Eight years on from his first visit, England Athletics CEO Chris Jones recently returned to the club to catch up with the athletes, coaches and parents who make the club so great! Since his last visit, the club has grown substantially, working alongside local schools to give more children and young people the opportunity to try out athletics.

It is not just about introducing new people to the sport however, as the club have worked hard to nurture talent throughout the age groups, with the fantastic javelin thrower Tom Rutter representing the club in Trinidad and Tobago, bringing home a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games last summer. Chris also chatted with number 1 ranked U17 shot putter Ellie Bostock (both pictured above with Chris).

Speaking on his visit, Chris said:

“It was good to be back at HAWCS Athletics Club meeting and to talk with some of the parents, athletes, coaches, and centre staff to understand how the club has progressed during the last few years and specifically since the pandemic.

“It was also assuring to know that there remains a strong alliance in place between the club and the Wodson Park track providers which must have been invaluable during the challenging period of 2020 and 2021."

“The club are obviously continuing to produce high quality young athletes in specific events due to the quality of coaching, and it was good to speak with some of those young internationals who have represented England during 2023.”
