What does being a Starter involve?

  • Set-up and test the electronic start system.  
  • Liaising with starter’s assistants.  
  • Issue starting commands and any warning cards to athletes.
  • Identify any false starts or starting infringements. 

What does being a Starters’ Assistant involve?

  1. Call-up athletes for each race and check bib numbers.
  2. Inform athletes their heat number/lane.
  3. Indicate to starter race is ready / any issues after start commands.
  4. Issue any warning cards to athletes based on instructions of starter.

Three steps to becoming a Level 1 Starter/Starter’s Assistant official

  1. Attend a Level 1 Starter/Starters Assistant official course.
    Duration: 2.5 hours.
    For anyone 16 years old or over.
  2. Complete the online safeguarding and health and safety modules that can be completed at your own pace.
    Available within Athletics Hub > Online Courses > myLearning
  3. Complete a DBS Check (myAthletics Portal > Apply Online DBS) and upload a licence photograph (myAthletics Portal > Personal Details > Edit).
