Spirit of 2012

Spirit of 2012

This page contains information about our funding partner, Spirit of 2012, and the fantastic work they do supporting England Athletics to improve our volunteering programme nationwide.

Who are Spirit of 2012?

Spirit of 2012 is the legacy charity from the London 2012 Olympics. They fund partners across the UK that provide opportunities in sports, physical activity, arts and culture, volunteering and social action. They have provided England Athletics with significant funding to support the delivery of the volunteering strand of our strategic plan, and are the funders of core  projects, outlined below.

How does the Spirit of 2012 funding benefit me?

Spirit of 2012 funding supports England Athletics to provide opportunities for clubs and volunteers to improve the experience of volunteering in their club or group. All programmes aim to improve wellbeing through supporting improvements to volunteering experience and creating opportunities for more people to become involved.

Opportunities funded by Spirit of 2012 include (but are not limited to):

  • A number of engagement events, including the annual Team Spirit Conference, the first of which  took place on Saturday 3rd February 2018
  • Our youth volunteering programme, Game Changers
  • Team Spirit Champions

Engagement events and the Team Spirit Conference

Our inaugural Team Spirit Conference took place in the University of Birmingham’s Great Hall, and was attended, free of charge, by over 130 volunteers.

On Saturday 3rd February 2018, Athletics and Running Volunteers from all corners of the country came together to Grow, Learn, Share and Celebrate with each other, attending workshops, networking and snapping a cheeky selfie or two!

Game Changers

Game Changers is our youth volunteering programme, supporting more individuals between the ages of 14-25 into Coaching and Officiating roles. At each wave, clubs can apply for grants for up to £4000 to spend on such costs as developing their young people, providing them with opportunities and paying for their qualifications, among others.

If you are interested in applying for this support, please contact Nikki English on nenglish@englandathletics.org.

Team Spirit Champions

Team Spirit Champions is a programme designed to support clubs and groups with improving the experience of their volunteers. Thanks to Spirit of 2012, these sessions are free for attendees, and provide an interesting, action packed opportunity to develop ideas and give practical tips for improving experience in your club or group.

Click here to see and book on our series of planned events in early 2018. If you can’t see a session near you, we can come and deliver at your club. Get in touch with us and can discuss, just email volunteering@englandathletics.org to arrange a session.

Volunteer Awards

In 2017, Spirit of 2012 contributed to the funding of the Volunteer Awards programme, designed to recognise those special individuals in each region who go above and beyond in the name of Volunteering.

In 2017, England Athletics recognised winners across the country in eight categories, and the funding from Spirit of 2012 enabled the celebrations of these wonderful individuals to be bigger and brighter than ever before!

How can I keep up-to-date on these opportunities?

Join our online Facebook community!

Team Spirit is an online community, encompassing Athletics and Running Volunteers in all roles, from all backgrounds and encourages individuals to share knowledge and ideas. England Athletics use the page to keep volunteers in the loop with opportunities that may interest them, celebrating the success of the volunteers and even run member-only competitions. Team Spirit members are usually the first to get the inside scoop on opportunities, so don’t delay; join in here!
