Celebrating Black History Month

October has been celebrated in the UK as Black History Month since 1987 so this year marks the 35th year it has been celebrated. This year's theme is 'Time For Change: Action Not Words' with a clear message that it is time to reset mindsets and support anti-racism with actions, not words.

Within our sport there have been numerous pioneers who have broken down barriers and laid the foundations for equality for future generations. There are also many fantastic role models currently involved in our sport. Throughout this month we will be sharing their stories, understanding who has inspired them and getting their perspective on what they would like to see from a diversity and inclusion perspective within our sport and the wider community.

Across the month we aim to bring you a range of stories from our sport including:

  • Tasha from Black Girls Do Run UK: A running community to inspire, encourage and motivate black women to run - and where no one is left behind!
  • Lorna Boothe MBE and Michael Davis: England Athletics’ Head of Finance Michael Davis, and Lorna Boothe MBE, Board Director, former elite athlete and now coach.
  • Devonté Casely-Hayford: Current coach and National Diversity Champion on the England Athletics Council.
