Selection Policy

Selection for the Commonwealth Youth Games will be primarily aimed at those with realistic medal aims.  The Games are taking place in India and therefore involving considerable travel, time zone changes and acclimatisation issues.  This provides a great opportunity for learning and gaining experience of dealing with these issues.  In light of this, the selection panel may also consider exceptional cases that are judged to have long term development potential and use this event to assist them in gaining competitive experience under more trying travel and competition conditions.

The maximum number of athletes that can be selected is two per event.  Accordingly, achieving a guideline standard will not necessarily result in selection. In this, and all other respects, the decision of the selection committee will be final.

Athletes selected for individual sprint events will be expected to form part of the relay squad if one is selected.   4x400m relay squads will be considered dependent on individual selections.

The guidelines set for this event are based on a review of the past Commonwealth Youth Games performances and current GB and NI European Junior standards.

Final selection will take place on the 11th August 2008 and will take account of performances at the England Athletics U17 and U20 Championships in 2008, together with other markers of current form.

Conditions to achieve the Entry Standards

  • Performances must be achieved during the period 1 January 2008 to 10th August 2008
  • Performances must be achieved during an official competition organised in conformity with IAAF Rules.
  • In accordance with IAAF Rule 147, performances achieved in mixed events (between male and female participants) held completely in the stadium shall not be permitted.
  • Wind assisted performances will not be accepted.
  • Indoor performances will be accepted, from the 2008 competitive season.

Regulations for Entries

A maximum of 2 (two) athletes from each Member Federation can compete in each event (except for Relays.)

  • The maximum number of events that an athlete can compete in is 2 (two) individual events and a relay.  If the 2 (two) individual events are track events, only 1 (one) of them may be longer than 200m.
  • Age Categories – Only athletes aged 16, 17 or 18 years of age, in the year of competition, will be considered for selection i.e. under 19 years on 1 January 2009.  That is born in the years 1990, 1991 or 1992

Important considerations
  • This Championship should be seen as part of a long-term strategy to provide competition and experience en-route to senior international events.
  • The World Junior Championships in July 2008 provide the key focus for the year, participating in an international competition 3 months later will disrupt early winter training, and impact on the start of University programmes.
  • Accordingly, early consultation regarding these issues and the logistics presented by an eastern international competition should be discussed with your Performance point of contact or Regional Talent Manager.
