Lily Hill Park in Bracknell was the venue for the 21st running of the Bracknell Schools Invitation Cross Country Relays. There are 4 races which were all about team running as the athletes took on the woodland and meadow course in a relay format. This year the event was made possible through financial support from England Athletics.
The City of Portsmouth AC has been working very hard over the last 12 months to extend the availability of competitive sport to a wider sector. Their Super Series is to provide a competitive outlet for athletes who would not normally have regular competitive opportunity. There's also a very successful U17 / U20 squad who receive extra benefits and incentives.
A photo of three Bexley Mencap runners taking part in Bexley's 5k parkrun has been shortlisted in Bexley Council's Stronger Communities exhibition. The three Bexley Mencap runners, Luke, Emmanuel and Matt, like to keep fit, and are regular members of Bexley Mencap's Run Together group which provides Keep Fit classes for people with Learning Disabilities.
It is with great sadness that England Athletics learnt of the passing of Ron Stonehouse. Ron was a stalwart of Farnham Athletics Club and after amalgamation, Aldershot Farnham and District AC. He was a high-achieving athlete and then becam a coach to a number of top runners including Bernie Ford, Christina Boxer and Roger Hackney.
On 22 February in Brighton, the Active Sussex Network brought together 65 local stakeholders to discuss best practice in engaging with inactive communities, drawing from examples from keynote speaker, Birmingham City Council's Karen Creavin.
Our Team Spirit Champions session are now underway and helping clubs develop the best ways to attract volunteers, and of ensuring their volunteers have an enjoyable and effective involvement in the sport. Almost a year ago, Bexley Mencap were lucky enough to be the first recipients of the good deeds carried out by the local GoodGym initiative. GoodGym are a Bexley group who combine keeping fit with performing handy tasks and jobs - running to and from their tasks. Last month Bexley Mencap RunTogether group worked alongside Bexley GoodGym for a session tidying up one of the local alleyways!
Before Christmas, we held pilot sessions for our brand-new Team Spirit Champions training. These free, fast-paced, interactive sessions will send you back to your club with plenty of ideas to bring bigger smiles to the faces of the people that make our sport happen: you, the volunteers! Many of our England Athletics registered athletes, coaches and RunTogether members take part in their local parkrun. One local Mencap RunTogether group has encouraged some of its members to take up the parkrun challenge. Matt Lett recently completed his 50th parkrun and has inspired some of his group to also take up the challenge!
Bracknell Athletics Club got involved last year as a pilot club for our new Game Changers Youth Volunteering Programme. They have since been supporting 10 young people through their Coaching Assistant Course. As a bonus, the club's Chairman is researching volunteering and has an online survey you are invited to take part in to better determine how to mobilise more people to help support athletics.
