Following the success of the Women’s Amateur Athletic Association 100 Years On exhibition which launched at the end of last year, we are putting together a new online exhibition for The Athletics Museum to trace the developments in athletics technique and technology. The online exhibition will be launching in October this year.

The home page of the exhibition will be a timeline, with links to separate pages where we can go into more detail about specifics, e.g. a section on the development of high jump technique as landing surfaces change. We are aiming to provide information in a way which sparks a deeper interest in athletics and its heritage -  for older audience members it will jog memories, and for the younger audience it might be a revelation that running was once on cinder tracks!

If the answer to any of the below is yes, even if it is just something small, and you would like to be involved please get in touch with Claire McQuillan our Heritage Officer on cmcquillan@englandathletics.org or 07587 162049 (Wednesdays to Fridays only). Remember, we do need modern stories/photos/objects as well as older things to show the development of athletics. Everyone who contributes will be credited in the exhibition.

Stories and anecdotes

Do you remember your first time on an all-weather track? Or a change in equipment which made a difference to your performance? Did you have training methods or practices which are different than today, or any other stories which would fit the bill?

Objects and images

Do you have memorabilia? Equipment, clothing, shoes, medals, programmes, photographs, scrap books, etc which can help to illustrate this exhibition?  If you have objects, Claire will advise the best way to photograph them so they can be included in the online exhibition.

Subject specialists

Do you have a particular passion for a certain area of athletics? Can you write to Claire, or dictate over the phone to her, a brief history of the pole vault for example, or descriptions of events which are no longer contested?
