Following the success of the Officials’ Taster Sessions at our England Athletics Championship events last year, we’re offering a new opportunity to apply for our events in 2020 – giving first-hand experience of officiating in a National Championships environment.
If you’d like to give officiating a try, then our Officials’ Taster Sessions will give you a flavour of the action as you shadow our experienced officials in a variety of disciplines and events at an England Athletics Championships.
As well as the opportunity to register for Track and Field events, this year you can also sign up to two Endurance events – the National Cross County Championships and the National Road Relays.
Plus, anyone who takes part in one of our Officials Taster Sessions will also be offered an opportunity to sign-up to a Level 1 Officials qualification free of charge!

What’s involved on the day?
Track and Field
Once you apply, and have been selected for an event, you will receive an email with all event details. You will arrive in the morning of the event to attend the briefing with Championship Officials. You will then be given your personal timetable for the day. You can then start assisting officials at events – rotating around the different disciplines at the Championship. There is a whole host of disciplines you can get involved in on the day, including: Track Judging, Field Judging, Starter/Starter’s, Assistant, Timekeeping and Photofinish. Once you have finished for the day, you will be given a list of Level 1 Officials’ course opportunities, which you can attend free of charge. You will also be given the details of a local official who will mentor you and help to continue your officiating journey.
