It was a record-breaking weekend at our Age Group Combined Events championships. There's more news for our young athletes including selection opportunities and the English Schools' AA cross country this weekend. There's also useful information for our clubs, officials and coaches.
This Saturday sees the New Balance English Schools' AA Cross Country Championships take place at the Norfolk Showground near Norwich. The course is mostly flat and fast, although there are several slight hills. We wish the athletes all the best and you can follow the championships on social media and via our Live Events page this Saturday.
The EIS in Sheffield welcomed the under 17 men and women to compete in the 2017 England Athletics indoor combined events championships. The men competed in the first day of their heptathlon and 49 women took on a one day pentathlon which culminated in a new British Record for Pippa Earley.
It was a fantastic second day of competition at the England Athletics under 17 and under 15 combined events championships. An unprecedented three overall championship best scores to add to yesterday's British Record and CBP made it four out of four top points scores in the history of the championships.
A reminder that there are still some key competition opportunities for U18* athletes who compete in the hurdles and throws and are looking to gain selection to the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017 are now available and are listed here. We would encourage athletes looking to gain selection to a national team to enter one or more of these competitions.
England Athletics are pleased to announce race walking teams selected to compete in the Lugano Trophy which takes place in Switzerland on 19th March, and the EAA Permit Meeting which takes place in Dudince, Slovakia on 25th March.
UK Athletics will be re-issuing UKA Rules for Competition with effect from 1st April 2018. They have now issued an invitation to submit proposals for Rule Changes. Affiliated Clubs and Associations are included in the list of those who may send in proposed changes; individuals attached to a Club should have support from the Club before proposing any rule changes.
The Tom Pink Relays were held in conjunction with the 2017 England Athletics indoor combined events championships at the EIS on Saturday 11th March. This is the 10th year that the relays have been held at the EIS and it continues to increase in popularity with more than 300 children in the under 11 and under 13 age groups taking part.
A recent blog by UK Anti-Doping revealed* that "...in 2012, 44% of athletes banned from sport were linked to the use of supplements. Many claimed that they were not aware the supplement products contained a banned substance, nor had they intended to cheat in any way."
We've got numerous opportunities for coaches to improve knowledge and skills in workshops taking place around the country over the next couple of weeks.
This includes Event Technical Workshops for jumps, throws, speed, endurance and physical preparation, Movement Skills workshops, tasters for visually impaired runners, guide running training, and specialist sessions for coaches based on pole vault, hammer, or using technology to support your coaching!
There will be a cremation service for family and close friends followed by a Tribute Service to Mike and his life in Athletics, Journalism and Teaching at 2pm on Friday 24 March 2017 at Central Hall, St Mary's St, Southampton SO14 1NF. All are very welcome to join for this.
