We report on a victory at the Welsh International, our 10k Race Walking championships, and look forward to our Age Group indoor Combined Events championships this weekend. We spoke to two volunteer coaches to find out more about their work and how they are developing their skills. Plus there is more news from the sport and a range of useful information for clubs, teachers and coaches.

This weekend sees the last of our three indoor track and field championships for 2017.  The Sheffield EIS will host the England Athletics Age Group indoor Combined Events championships where our Under 17 and Under 15 athletes will be hoping to be crowned indoor champion and hope to set themselves up for a successful outdoor season.

Sunday's Welsh International saw England Athletics Under 20 and Under 18 teams take on their compatriots in Wales.  Following 24 track and field events, England emerged victorious with a total points score of 243 to 162.

We caught up with two of people taking the Athletics Coach qualification to find out more about their experiences and ambitions, as well as how the course is benefitting their work in their clubs. Neil Johnstone and Julie Thurlow have different backgrounds in the sport and their clubs also have different histories, but they are both developing the coaching skills they are using week-by-week with the athletes in their clubs.

In the first major domestic road event of the season, Tom Bosworth in his first road event since his brilliant 6th place in the 20km walk in Rio, clocked a comfortable victory to take the England title on a windy and wet spring day in Coventry. In the Women's 10km Gemma Bridge took the women's title with a big new personal best.

England Athletics are pleased to announce the launch of its new Schools Athletics App. This app builds on the highly successful Athletics 365 app and is aimed specifically at teachers and those working in the schools and education environment. We would also like to remind coaches and assistant coaches of what is available on the Athletics 365 App and how this can help those coaching athletics in clubs or taking Coaching qualifications.

England 5k Road Championships: 28th April England 5k Road Championships: 28th April

With over 400 entries already for the inaugural England 5k Road Championships, the event looks like being a great opportunity to post a fast 5k.  The race takes place on the evening of Friday 28th April, and has been added to the series of England Road Race Championships which kicks off with the Virgin London Marathon; the 10k, 10 Miles and Half-Marathon Championships all take place in Autumn 2017.

Mike Smith Mike Smith

England Athletics was greatly saddened to hear of the passing away of Mike Smith. Mike was one-time coach to over 30 International Athletes including Iwan Thomas, David Dear, Donna Hartley, Kriss Akabusi, Roger Black and Todd Bennett. He also fulfilled a wide variety of other roles in the sport. Mike’s wisdom, enthusiasm and friendship in supporting athletes, coaches and many others in the sport were invaluable and will be greatly missed.

Jenny Meadows, Olympian and 2009 800m World Championship bronze medallist, visited Exeter Harriers on Thursday following the club winning our England Athletics easyfundraising #spendchristmas competition.

The Sport and Recreation Alliance have launched their annual Community Sport and Recreation Awards for 2017.  They have been running this awards programme, which is focused on celebrating the great work going on in sport and recreation at a grassroots level, for over 20 years and entries for this year are now open.

Sky Academy have announced that their Sports Scholarship programme applications are open for a second rotation supporting up and coming sporting talent of the future.  The Sky Academy Sports Scholar programme aims to give additional support and aid exciting 16-25 year old athletes in fulfilling their potential on the international stage.
