One of the most prestigious Cross Country races of the Winter takes place in Seville, Spain this Sunday when the 36th Cross International de Italica is staged. The English Cross Country Association has four teams in action representing England.
The West Midlands Region 2018 London Mini Marathon Trials will take place on 17th February, at the Stourport Cycleway. These trials are for selection into the West Midlands team for the London Mini Marathon which takes place on 22nd April 2018.
Holly Mills (Club: Andover AC, Coach: James Coney) made a record breaking return to combined events when she took the England Athletics U20 Indoor Pentathlon title. Both Holly and Jade O'Dowda (Club: Oxford City AC, Coach: Marcia Marriott) eclipsed the former championship record as the Senior and U20 men also got their championships underway.
Mind, the mental health charity is teaming up with R.E.D January to encourage people to Run Every Day throughout January to support their own mental wellbeing, while raising awareness and support for mental health. How far or fast people run, or walk is completely up to them, but by getting active for 31 consecutive days in January they can not only kick-start their own year, but also make a positive difference to the lives of others.
Chris Jones headed to the Bedfordshire club to find out more about their activities. He visited Vandyke School where the young athletes and a throws session took place there, and found out this is just one of the venues used by the club.
Athletes from Allerton Junior Athletics Club have enjoyed a series of major achievements in events up and down the country over the last six months, and their successes have not gone unnoticed with a ringing endorsement received from a former World Champion.
Following County competitions and then Regional rounds earlier this month, the Grand Final of the English Schools' AA Cross Country Championships took place in Kent on 25th November. Dr Challoner's High School and Grammar School in Amersham dominated the podiums and both the Junior Boys' and the Inter Girls' compeititons, first and second positions were separated by just one point!
The English Schools' AA 37th Cross Country Cup Final takes place this Saturday 27th November at Sevenoaks School in Kent. Competing for the school team title are Juniors (years 7/8) and Intermediates (years 9/10). This year's course is around the school, with the course going slightly uphill at the start and from about half way round the final section it is flat and fast.
Following a highly successful switch to Prestwold Hall near Loughborough in 2017, the National Cross-Country Finals for school years 5, 6, and 7 will return to the same venue on Saturday March 24th2018. England Athletics will be supporting the event again, and with the action from the course being live-streamed on a 12 metre screen, and live across the world, it certainly has a big occasion feel about it.
The Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) has a fund which is able to support English Athletes under the age of 23 who are in full time education, active in athletics and not receiving other funding. Applications are welcomed, and note the deadline is 10th February 2018.
