Greg Rutherford, the defending long jump champion, has taken the decision to withdraw from Team England for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The 31-year-old (Marshall Milton Keynes, Dan Pfaff) took the difficult decision having reflected upon the challenges he faces following a period away from competitive athletics.
The England teams faced very strong opposition from a host of African runners at the Cross Internacional de Italica over the weekend.
One of the most prestigious Cross Country races of the Winter takes place in Seville, Spain this Sunday when the 36th Cross International de Italica is staged. The English Cross Country Association has four teams in action representing England.
The best of Britain will gather in Birmingham on the weekend of 17-18 February as they compete for the prestigious honour of being crowned British champion and battle for a place on the British team ahead of March's IAAF World Indoor Championships due to be held in the very same arena a few later.
While the Simplyhealth Great Edinburgh XCountry was the weekend's big event in the UK - with highlights footage and links to online coverage available - there was plenty of other action this past weekend. This included plenty of cross country league action,the South of England Indoor Champs took place at Lee Valley with the men's 60m won by John Otugade in a world indoor qualifier of 6.60. The Northern Athletics Championships at Sheffield included Adam Hague winning the pole vault with a 5.40m leap. Looking globally, in Qatar Gemma Steel and Chris Thompson claimed half-marathon podium places while Eilish McColgan clocked a winning 10km PB of 31:50.
It was a team of young English athletes who were given the opportunity to race in the 4x1k relays which is held to contest the Stewart Cup as part of the Simplyhealth Great Edinburgh XCountry.
The West Midlands Region 2018 London Mini Marathon Trials will take place on 17th February, at the Stourport Cycleway. These trials are for selection into the West Midlands team for the London Mini Marathon which takes place on 22nd April 2018.

England Athletics are pleased to announce online entry is now open for our Age Group individual and combined events indoor championships for the coming season 2018. The events both take place at the EIS in Sheffield.
On a busy weekend which included the Antrim International and most County cross country championships, there was plenty of action: Jonny Davies clocked 3000m PB as four athletes went sub-8:00 in Sheffield for the indoor BMC races, while Robbie Grabarz had a strong start to 2018 with 2.30m clearance.
