Northwood Academy of Hurdles coaching series

We are pleased to announce the Northwood Academy of Hurdles coaching series. Five sessions over the next few months provide the opportunity for coaches to work in small teams, enabling them to share ideas whilst working with athletes of their selected age group. The emphasis is on the technical development of hurdlers but other aspects of athlete development, e.g. strength and conditioning - will also figure.

Workshops to help improve your athletes' performances

Our Movement Skills workshops blend theory and practical, are designed to stimulate a better understanding of the crucial movement patterns that underpin all running, jumping and throwing activities that form the basis of athletics. Then, to propose interventions that are not only designed to improve an athlete's performance, but also to minimise the occurrence of injury.

Safeguarding in Athletics

All clubs want to provide a safe and secure environment for their members. This new safeguarding course has been developed by UKA Welfare Team in partnership with EduCare Ltd. Specifically created for athletics, it provides an understanding of what safeguarding is when it comes to children, young people and vulnerable adults in athletics.

Athletics Coach qualification - new courses launching soon

Following the successful launch of the new Athletics Coach courses in April there have been in excess of 150 coaches attend the courses country-wide. With another round of courses due to launch from September we are confident this will increase over the coming months and lead to more coaches, in specific event groups, at club level.

New eLearning course ‘Coaching People with a Visual Impairment’

British Blind Sport and UK Coaching have created a new eLearning course 'Coaching People with a Visual Impairment'. This new course raises awareness of the crucial role coaches' play in helping people with visual impairments (VI) overcome barriers to participation in sport and physical activity, complementing UK Coaching's 'Person-centred' principle of great coaching.

New welfare and wellbeing resources launched to support clubs

All clubs want to provide a safe and secure environment for their members. To support them in doing this, new resources have been developed by UKA Welfare Team in partnership with EduCare Ltd to help volunteers and staff develop their skills and awareness in the areas of Mental Wellbeing in Sport Physical Activity and Preventing Bullying in Sport.

Development opportunities coming up for athletes and coaches

We are pleased to invite coaches and athletes to attend our upcoming Regional Coach and Athlete Days. Starting in August these days include event specific Technical Workshops, with practical sessions for coaches and athletes, as well as opportunities to share ideas and discuss key subjects.

Coaching code of practice published by UKA

Following the creation of a working group to create a Coaching Code of Practice for athletics, UK Athletics has published the code that will be introduced over the next 12 months. The newly created Coaching Code of Practice provides clear guidance on the standards of professional conduct to which UK Athletics expects coaches to adhere, and volunteer coaches to aspire.

Women's Sport Week - from non-runner to LiRF leader

We're supporting Women's Sport Week 2018! #WSW2018. Jan started running on New Year's day 2016. She ran on her own until her first 5k on Mayday that year led to her joining the Histon and Impington runners and last September she ran her first half marathon. She now leads a Couch to 5k group at the college where she works.
