It's all go for officials on Road Traffic Management course

A successful one day course in Road Traffic Management was held at the Eastlands Athletics Centre (Sportcity), Manchester on Saturday 16th July for Road Race organisers and officials wanting to learn how to manage traffic at road running events.

The course has enabled attendees to become qualified Traffic Management Operatives (TMOs), equipping them with the skills and knowledge to safely direct traffic movements at their own road races. Having people trained in the TMO role is becoming more and more necessary for race organisers saving them considerable expense. This is due to free road traffic management being steadily withdrawn by providers such as the police, who now require payment to assist with road closures at road races. As a result several races across the country have been cancelled as race organisers were unable to provide enough funds to ensure traffic could be managed adequately.

Finishing off the day were some practical team exercises outdoors, where scenarios were given simulating potential road traffic problems for attendees to solve.

The course as a whole was enjoyed by all who attended with feedback being resoundingly positive.  Attendees found the course useful, thought provoking and “unexpectedly enjoyable”.  Many commented that the allowance for time to share ideas and experiences was particularly useful and that it was helpful to meet other local race organisers in a similar position.

Following the course several attendees recommended that more courses are held to train more club members to become TMOs, thus ensuring greater support from their local Safety Advisory Group (SAG) increasing the likelihood of a road race going ahead. Consequently, plans are being put in place to hold more Road Traffic Management courses in areas such as Cheshire and North Yorkshire.

England Athletics will be holding several one day traffic management courses for Road Running officials and organisers across the country with future courses currently being planned in Cheshire, North Yorkshire, Suffolk, Surrey and North London. All courses will be added to our events page when finalised:
