World University Games 2017

World University Games 2017

The 2017 Summer Universiade will be held in Taipei, Chinese Taipei from the 19th - 30th August. If you are interested in being considered for the Great Britain Team please see the important information on completing the nomination form and make sure you meet the General Eligibility Criteria on the BUCS website.

Entries are by nationality (Great Britain and Northern Ireland), and students need not necessarily be studying in the UK or competing in the BUCS domestic programme. Entries to the World University Games are made by BUCS on behalf of Great Britain & NI, supported by the National Governing Bodies of sport in Great Britain, and the level of performance will dovetail with NGB World Class performance pathways.

All entries are contingent on NGB support and funding. Each selected athlete will be required to make an Athlete Personal Contribution Payment. This amount is a set contribution to event costs that typically include: entry, flights, physiotherapy and medical support, travel visas, team management and administration, accommodation and catering, teamwear, and insurance.

If you are interested in being considered for the Great Britain Team please read and make sure you meet the General Eligibility Criteria on the BUCS website ( .

It may seem a long way away until the August event but there are strict criteria that ALL athletes who want to be considered for selection NEED to do before 1st May. You MUST fill in an BUCS nomination form which can be found here (

Also read and understand the selection policy document which can be found here as there are peculiarities this year with the European U23 Championships.

The European U23 Championships will take priority over the World University Games in 2017 but they will be selected on the same day one after another.

There will be no trials event for the World University Games and as the team size is limited to only 20 athletes the standards are challenging. Just by getting the relevant standard does not mean you will be selected it just means you can be considered against every other athlete and discipline in the selection meeting that has also met the qualification standard.

The international University Sports Federation (FISU) organise the World University Games (the Universiade) every two years. The Summer Universiade consists of 10 compulsory sports with 13 compulsory disciplines and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country. The Universiade is widely recognised as the second largest multisport Games in the world after the Olympics and progressively has risen to World Class in scale and standard, with over 10,000 participants from 150+ countries.
