Take your coaching to the next level in 2018

Take your coaching to the next level in 2018

This winter England Athletics is delivering a series of workshops available to coaches working at all levels, across all event groups.

Many coaches have already attended events and you can get involved to help develop your coaching and help your athletes to get more from the sport.

There are a number of event specific opportunities for coaches, as well as movement skills / physical preparation workshops. These enable coaches across event groups to learn how to be more effective at developing the movement skills which will enable your athletes to move more quickly and efficiently, generate greater force and reduce the risks of injury.

Other workshops are there to support people working specifically with younger athletes, including youth endurance coaches, and to help prepare people who have taken the very popular Leadership in Running Fitness qualification to make the progression to the Coach in Running Fitness qualification.

Attendees on the ‘LiRF to CiRF’ workshop have fed back that they have found it very beneficial in preparing them to take the Coach in Running Fitness. Comments have included, “The taster course provided a great insight to the coaching course. It did remind me about some aspects of the leadership course that I have perhaps not fully implemented or become complacent about.” and “I thought the main thing I took away from the workshop was confidence in my ability to complete CiRF. I was concerned about the amount of study needed and assessment but Steve [the tutor on the LiRF to CiRF workshop attended] did a great job of allaying any concerns. I want more knowledge so I can help others with more complex queries and training support and CiRF would help me bridge that gap.”

Event group specific activity

Alongside these workshops we are also deliver a range of activities to support coaches in each event group area. These include Masterclasses which are one day or a few hours long and concentrate on a specific area of expertise or subject matter.

Our Local and Regional Coach and Athlete Days are training and education days/evenings designed to bring together local coaches and athletes to train and develop expertise.  They will deliver a mixture of practical and theory content, enable coaches and athletes to mix and share experiences and cascade knowledge from the national level events.  These days will be organised and delivered by a team of Regional Coach Leads in each event group area (endurance / jumps / throws / speed).  Each Regional Coach Lead (3 or 4 across the country in the 4 event group areas) is tasked with delivering 4 coach and athlete days or evenings each autumn/winter.

Who are they for? Club coaches, and athletes (where advertised), who are looking to develop their skill level. Suitable for Coaching Assistants, Athletics Coach and established coaches.

Details of activities in each event group are given in the event pages:

More that you can to get involved with

There are also other workshops that we run from time to time for example at the end of 2017 an Introduction to Wheelchair Racing Workshop was held in Gateshead which was organised through Gateshead Harriers and the Inspiration Programme and attended by 17 people. At the attendance was Stephen Miller (Triple Paralympic Champion), Rachel Miller (Managing Director of Smile through Sport), as well as coaches from around the local area, and also a number of athletes who were relatively new to wheelchair racing. This workshop covered:

  1. Introduction to wheelchair racing and impairment information
  2. Equipment Overview
  3. Positioning and Pushing Technique
  4. Training Implications
  5. Putting it all into practice – the coaching eye

Feedback from a number of participants was that the workshop provided some great information to help to support the development of wheelchair racing for the Club, and to help develop new athletes getting started in the sport. As one of the attendees said, ‘This was pitched at just the right level for the needs of what I need.’
