Role models for women coaches - Joanne's story

Role models for women coaches - Joanne's story

Are you passionate about being involved in coaching athletics?  Because now is the time to make it happen.

England Athletics are working with local women in local clubs to tell you how they become involved in coaching, what support was given, how they juggle family commitments, and work life.

Joanne Hunt is an Athletics Coach at Braintree & District AC - become inspired by reading her coaching story.

Joanne says:
I qualified as an athletics coach for Braintree District & Athletics Club in 2012. The events I coach are long jump and shot put for Under 13s and Under 15s.

I got involved in coaching through my daughter who competes at the club. Coaching has given me valuable experience in explaining to the athletes why we warm up, why movement skills are important to why we choose the food choices we do. One of the most important tips to learn as a coach is to listen to the athletes as they always ask a lot of questions.

I have attended a lot of workshops offered by England Athletics to develop my coaching skills which has now helped me to move onto the online modules for event groups in jumps and throws.

I am a working mum and fit coaching around by family and work life through organising and planning sessions in advance,  and being able to adapt sessions quickly if needed.

My advice to new coaches would be, to have a go and ask if you need help as coaches in your local club will help support and advise you like those did in my club.

I am happy to give any advice or support to any women looking to get involved.  So give it a go, you never know until you try coaching. joannehunt00@tiscali.co.uk
