Mountain Running teams announced for International Youth Cup

The WMRA International Mountain Running Youth Cup will take place at Lanzada, Italy on 16 June. We are pleased to announce the England team who will compete at the event.

The course in Italy looks fast and technical in places, which should suit the English athletes who all performed well in the 25 degree heat of the trial race held at Coiners.

Two strong teams (boys and girls) have been selected from the trial event - with the boys in particular impressing. Three of the boys who were part of the team that finished 3rd at last year's Youth Cup at Gagliano del Capo - Euan Brennan, Matthew Mackay and Joe Hudson - will be racing again in Lanzada and they will be joined by English Schools' Fell Running Champion Josh Dickinson.

Under 18 Team

  • Euan Brennan (Club: Ilkley Harriers, Coach: Andrew Henderson)
  • Josh Dickinson (Club: City of York, Coach: Ian Wilcock)
  • Joe Hudson (Club: Keighley and Craven, Coach: Alan Buckley/John Dennis)
  • Matthew Mackay (Club: Rossendale, Coach: Graham Wright)
  • Emily Field (Club: Bingley Harriers, Coach: Karen Glerum/Alan Buckley)
  • Eve Pannone (Club: Eden Runners, Coach: Derek Hurton)
  • Finty Royle (Club: Chorley ATC, Coach: Katie Hewison)

Team managers: Duncan Richards, Carol Evans

Euan Brennan was England’s highest finisher at the 2017 Youth Cup in Gagliano del Capo finishing 5th and helping the team to 3rd place medals. Later in the year Euan became English Schools' Fell Running Champion before finishing 3rd at the Junior Home International in Scotland where England won the team prize. Euan was placed 9th at the CAU 2018 Inter Counties cross country Championships, 1st at the North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country Championship and 2nd at the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships. Euan is currently 1st in the UK Under 17 5000m rankings and he finished 3rd in the trial race for Lanzada.

This is Josh Dickinson’s first international vest for mountain running but he has represented England Schools' twice at cross country. Josh has a strong track and cross country background - winning the Yorkshire, Northern and Inter Counties cross country Championships in 2017. In 2018 he retained his Yorkshire crown and placed 2nd in the Northern and 7th in the ECCA English National cross country championships. Josh is currently 6th in the UK U17 3000m rankings. Josh was 2nd at the trial race for Lanzada and was also English Schools' Fell Running Champion last year.

Joe Hudson represented England in Gagliano del Capo at the Youth Cup last year finishing 14th and helping the team win 3rd place team medals. Joe was 2nd at last year's Junior Home International and helped his team take the British title. He was 2nd at this year’s Yorkshire Cross Country Championships. This will be Joe’s 4th time representing England at Mountain Running.

Matthew Mackay wins his third England vest after winning the trial race at Coiners. His first vest was at last year's Youth Cup at Gagliano del Capo where he was 2nd England finisher and 9th overall. Later in the year he won the British U17 title at the Junior Home International in Scotland. This year Matthew has won the Lancashire and Lancashire Schools Cross Country titles as well as winning the Lancashire 3000m championships on the track.

Emily Field secures her second England mountain running vest with her 2nd place at the trial race. An experienced runner over the country and fell, Emily followed her 3rd place at last years Junior Home International in Peebles with a silver medal in the 2017 English Schools Fell Running Championships. Emily has continued her good form in 2018 finishing 17th in the CAU Inter Counties Cross Country Championships and 35th in the Virgin London Mini-Marathon.

Following her 4th place in the trial race, Eve Pannone makes her debut in an England vest in mountain running. She has a strong cross country background and finished 51st in the CAU 2018 Inter Counties cross country Championships.

Another to make her England debut in mountain running, Finty Royle secured the final automatic place in the team after finishing 3rd in the trial race. Like her fellow team mates, Finty has a strong background in cross country and she finished 61st in the CAU 2018 Inter Counties cross country Championships.

This will be Rosie Woodhams' second England vest following her win at the trial race. She made her debut for England at last year’s Junior Home International in Peebles finishing a fine 2nd. Rosie had a good cross country season in 2018 becoming Cumbria Cross Country Champion, finishing 14th in the ECCA English National Cross Country Championships as well as 9th at the CAU Inter Counties Cross Country Championships. Her good form has been carried on to the track where she recently became Cumbria U17 champion at 1500m.
