Manchester’s Youth Development – Off to a Strong Start!
In late April a strong cohort of 24 Assistant Coaches and Athletics Coaches from the Manchester Athletics Network Clubs contributed yet more time to raise the quality of provision locally.
A range of Clubs coaches took part in the network’s first Athletics 365 Workshop at Manchester’s Regional Athletics Arena, Eastlands.
The evening started with Great Britain’s Middle Distance star Tom Lancashire reinforcing the idea of ‘getting the basics right’. Tom answered questions from the coaches and talked about his varied training experience from Junior to Elite supporting the philosophy of getting a good base in place before training too hard too young. Encouraging variety, Tom reasoned he has had very few injuries because of this!
The workshop was delivered by National Youth Coach Development Programme Coach, Paul Wibberley, who shared ideas on how to put 365 into practice and how 365 supports his own athletes’ development.
All coaches took part in practical elements of the workshop, enjoying it just as the kids will do and getting competitive about the technical feedback received from their temporary coach! Many even progressed on to the yellow stage!
Athletics 365 is a multi-event, young people development programme, which introduces athletes to the fundamental skills of athletics (vital to every sport). It is aimed predominantly at 8-15 year olds, but the resources can easily be adapted for use with younger and older athletes in the early stages of their athletics life. The club coaches fed back that the flexibility of the resource would benefit all club athlete regardless of age.
Coaches left with the resource and ideas on how to share best practice and encourage 365 to be the starting point for all new athletes in their Athletics Club. The network will now support those coaches who attended through on-site visits to enable effective implementation of Athletics 365.
