M60 Athletics Network developing young athletes
The M60 Athletics Network which covers the Manchester area has run a number of workshops recently to help with the development of local young athletes.
Sarah Friday (Greater Manchester and Cheshire CCSO) and Colin Allen (M60 Athletics Network Coordinator) organised a Children's Coach Development workshop was held at Radclyffe Athletics Centre, (Home of Oldham and Royton Harriers and Athletics Club) and was aimed at any coach wanting to recap, or gain knowledge on Physical preparation of athletes aged between 8 and 12 using fun games to improve run/jump/ throw technique with reference to Athletics 365. The workshop was attended by coaches from 5 M60 network clubs who had an opportunity to share current practice with a focus on creativity, enjoyment, and challenging skill acquisition appropriately. Feedback from the workshop included, "It was very well delivered, the practical delivery made it easy to understand." and "I really enjoyed the session and came away with some great ideas." Following the feedback the next session with a focus on developing young athletes will be available later in the year.
Under the new YDL format four clubs (Altrincham and District Athletic Club/ Oldham and Royton Harriers and Athletics Club/ Rochdale Harriers and Salford Metropolitan Athletic Club) decided to work together to form a composite team as a pilot for the 2013/14 season. The M60 Athletics Nomads has been set up and the athletes competed as the M60 Nomads and made the most of the opportunity to compete as U17 and U20 athletes. Their efforts were rewarded with a top team finish on Sunday 28th April.
And finally, the M60 Athletics Network Miniathlon took place last month at Longford Park (Home of Trafford AC). This was the first of three 3 hour multi-event competitions for the young athletes (U11 and U13) and was a big hit with athletes, parents and coaches. 70 athletes from across seven clubs competed in three events (run/jump/throw) aligned to the UKA Academy Triathlon Awards. On a sun drenched bank holiday afternoon there were plenty of smiles during a busy and active three hours of athletics events.
