London teams battle for Sportshall UK Final place

The U13 and U15 Sportshall Athletics Regional Event took place at Crystal Palace on Saturday 12th February.  Teams from the Newham and South London McCain Athletics Networks contended for the coveted team and All Rounder places at the UK Final.

Despite their only being two teams in each age group, the competition was fun and exciting.

In the U13 Girls' competition there were some good performances in the field.  Aysha Bentic, from Newham, threw 8.84m to take the gold medal in the shot. In the Vertical Jump Kassa Sealey representing South London jumped 53cm for first place.  The track performances didn’t disappoint either with Jasmin Headman of Newham taking the honours in the 4 Lap race.  South London led the way in the 4x1 lap relay, with Newham succeeding in the 4x2 lap event.  Eventually Newham took the team honours.

The U13 boy’s competition saw Newham come out on top again.  One of the most notable field performances came from Jordan Andrew (Newham) in the Standing Long Jump.  His jump of 2.48m won the competition and is currently the best jump recorded in the Aviva Sportshall UK Championship season of 2011. The Newham McCain Athletics Network dominated the track competition, showing their depth and strength. However the South London McCain Network, claimed 1st place in the 4 x 1 lap relay.

London Sportshall 2011 U15 girls all rounder winnerThe All Rounder competition in the U15 age group was hotly contested in both the girls' and boys' event.  The afternoon saw the athletes compete in three events.  In the girls' event Ola Adeyemi of Newham won the title beating Rhianna Madden-Hansle and Francesca McLymont of the South London team. The team event was very close with only six points separating the two teams. Eventually South London won that spot at the UK Final.

There was a clean sweep from the U15 South London boys, taking the individual honours.  Kieran Clarke put on an impressive display of athleticism, to win the All Rounder beating his team mates Aaron Wells and Devonte Casely-Hayford who tied in 2nd place to the title.  Only twelve points separated the teams at the final result, with South London again taking the place at the UK Final.

The Aviva Sportshall UK Final will be at the LG Arena, NEC, Birmingham on Sunday 3rd April 2011.  On show will be the UK’s hottest athletic talent from the U13 and U15 age groups.   For more information visit
