London Athletic Networks get Sportshall Fever!

Crystal Palace was the place to be on Saturday 15th January as nearly 300 under 11 athletes and supporters attended the Aviva Sportshall Fun in Athletics competition.

Three of the London Athletics Networks were represented on the day. The Newham McCain Athletics Network, Kent London McCain Athletics Network, and South London McCain Athletics Network all fielding strong teams in the competition. The event saw many children experiencing athletic competition for the very first time, introducing them to a sport that is fun and exciting!

The U11 girls' competition was a tightly fought contest with it going down to the very last race to decide the winner.  With only 7 points separating the top 3, Waltham Forest come out on top beating Wandsworth and Kent London AN to the title.  The under 11 boys' competition proved just as exciting, with Waltham Forest taking top honours over Wandsworth and Newham AN respectively.

Ben Noad the South London Network Activator said, “As a Network this has been one of the best things we have been involved with.  I lost count of the amount of times kids asked me to do more events.  We cannot wait for the next one!  This was a great example of the enthusiasm that can be generated through short form athletics.  It shows that this sport can be a match for any sport when the right concept is implemented properly.  Long may Sportshall athletics continue”.

The U13 and U15 athletes take their turn to compete in the Aviva Sportshall Regional Finals at Crystal Palace on the 12th February. The winning girls and boys teams in each age group will go through to represent the London Region in the UK Championships. The coveted U15 All Rounder title will also be hotly contest within the region, with the winning girl and boy going forward to the UK Final at the end of the Sportshall Season.
