England ready for inaugural Commonwealth Half-Marathon Championships

Teams from across the globe will gather in Cardiff on Sunday 7th October for what will be the inaugural Commonwealth Half-Marathon Championships. Elite runners will battle it out ahead of the 25,000 runners taking part in the mass participation race, on what looks to be a super-fast course.

Teams from Australia, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, New Zealand, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are due to gather in Cardiff. Teams of four with three to score will count in the international match and the England team has both a mix of experience and youth to challenge for a team medal.

England Athletics are pleased to be sending full teams despite a couple of withdrawals due to injury set-backs from the original eight selected back in July. Team Leader is Charlotte Fisher and Team Coach is Spencer Duval.

The team for the next weekend is:

  • Mohamud Aaden (Club: Thames Valley Harriers, Coach: Paul Oppe)
  • Matthew Clowes (Club: Cardiff AC)
  • Alex Teuten (Club: Southampton AC, Coach: Rod Lock)
  • Tom Wade (Club: Aldershot, Farnham & District AC )
  • Tracy Barlow (Club: Thames Valley Harriers, Coach: Nick Anderson)
  • Gemma Steel (Club: Charnwood AC, Coach: Liz Nuttall)
  • Dani Nimmock (Club: City of Norwich, Coach: Pauline Ash)
  • Lucy Reid (Club: Tonbridge AC, Coach: Richard Owen)

Barlow and Steel are experienced at competing at World level on the roads and both represented Great Britain at the World Half-Marathon Championships in Valencia earlier in the year. Mohamud Aaden also showed he can perform well on the big occasions as he made a fine debut performance for the Great Britain team in Valencia. Teuten, Wade and Nimmock are no strangers to international competition either, whilst Lucy Reid makes her England debut after a late call up over the weekend.
