Vote Now - England Athletics shortlisted for Women's Sport Trust Awards

Judges have shortlisted England Athletics as a finalist for the Women's Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Awards. We were selected as a finalist in the category for governing bodies along with British Triathlon and England Netball due to the work being done though the sport to redress the gender balance in participation and coaching of athletics and running. 

The award is decided by a public vote. You can vote now.

The following work and initiatives across the sport were highlighted:

RunTogether – Launched in January 2017

  • Over 1,000 RunTogether Groups listing over 10,000 upcoming group run sessions available to sign up to, driving grassroots participation.
  • 20,000 women have attended a RunTogether Group run since launch, including mixed and female-only groups.
  • Two of three RunTogether ambassadors in the media are female – Dr Alex Rotas and Sam Mollaghan
  • The RunTogether website has reached a predominantly female audience (70%)

This Girl Can Run

  • Profile: 135,000+ strong community on social media reaching an average of 2 million people per month
  • Participation: the campaign has influenced over 41,000 women to start running or run more often

Grassroots Running Leaders

  • Over the last year, England Athletics have delivered the Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) course to 2,852 females and 2,105 males, equipping runners to lead groups of runners in their local community or workplace

Affiliated Club Runners & Athletes

  • The number of female England Athletics registered athletes increased by 10.6% in 2016/17 (c 7,500). This represents an increase of 85% and so far in 2017, the proportion of registered members that are women is over 50%. This is consistent with the growth over the last eight years from 42,255 female registered athletes in 2008/09 to 78,220 in 2016/17. This represents an increase of 85%!

Pathway to High Performance

  • Awarded £6,700 in local bursaries to 61 women to support their progression in athletics coaching
  • Encouraged and facilitated international high performance female coaches to come together, discuss and celebrate high performance female coaching. Events including The Shine: Elite Women Coach Event ‘a collaborative initiative between Sports Coach UK and the Swedish Sport Federation.
  • In January 2017, England Athletics selected 2008 Olympic 400m champion and multiple world medallist, Christie Ohuruogu, to captain the mixed England Team at the Nitro Athletics series in Melbourne taking on Usain Bolts All Stars
