England 5k Championships: preview
With the England 5k Championships taking place this coming Friday evening (28th April) many of the nation’s top endurance athletes will be heading to Kingsley, Cheshire.
The popular Mid-Cheshire 5k Series is hosting this inaugural England 5k Road Championships and a capacity entry with an in depth elite field in the men’s race in particular should make for an exciting evening.
Amongst the entries is Ben Connor (Club: Derby, Coach: Spencer Duval) who has impressed on both the road and the cross country (pictured) and with a best of 13:55 for 5k perhaps starts as favourite to win. However, Andy Maud (Club: Highgate, self-coached), winner of last year’s Great Ireland Run in Dublin over 10k, who has also shown good form on both surfaces in recent months will be amongst the challengers. Philip Sesemann (Club: Blackheath & Bromley, Coach: Andy Henderson) who has been concentrating mainly on the indoors this winter - setting a 3000m PB of 8:00.78 as well as some quick 1500s - could well be one to watch.
The women’s competition should be equally interesting with a number of the fastest leg runners from the Area and National 6 Stage relays entered. Amongst them include Emma Clayton (Club: Leeds City– Andy Henderson), Rachael Burns (Club: Liverpool Harriers, Coach: Anthony Clarke), Sophie Cowper (Club: Rotherham, Coach: Gary Warhurst) and Laura-Jane Smith (Club: Nottingham, Coach: Sarah Davey) who have all shown recent good form on the road. They are also joined by a returning Elle Vernon (Club: Stockport, Coach: Steve Vernon).
Race Director, Michael Harrington said, "The Mid-Cheshire 5k Series has proven to be a popular event in recent years and club runners are attracted to it by the fast course. We are delighted to be hosting the inaugural England 5k Championships as part of our event and it should be an exciting evening of racing."
