Club Run applications for 2017 now open

Club Run applications for 2017 now open

England Athletics are pleased to announce the launch of the next round of Club Run and welcome applications from road running clubs across the country.

In the last twelve months twenty-five clubs across the country took part in the Club Run programme, with 75 club run visits and approximately 1000 running participants taking part in the sessions, which were led by 21 experienced coaches and mentors from the National Coach Development Programme.

Here’s what some of the participants had to say about Club Run.

"As a coach of such a large and diverse group of runners I have found it difficult to plan the sessions to meet everyone’s needs. On club nights I have often wondered if we just ran together or were we actually training together. Bill (Boyd) showed me how to blend quantity with quality. He gave me confidence to expect a higher level of exertion in the sessions and to make each session progressive, building towards their goal."  David Newton, Chairman BRJ Run and Tri Club, Cambridgeshire

"Bryan (Clinton) has transformed the training within the club, it has enabled us to think in terms of an athlete instead of just a person that runs. Already the improvement has been incredible, on a personal level, Bryan has helped to go from a 1:26 half marathon to a 1:20 half marathon!"  Simon Gilbert, Chairman Devizes Running Club, Wiltshire

"The sessions we have worked through with Rob (McKim) have been a great support to help both leaders and runners learn more about pacing. We've built on the training and have used them to help marathon and half marathon training. The weekend after our last run with Rob saw some great race times, even paced halves and even negative splits! Our Run leaders have also gained confidence in giving feedback and controlling more technical sessions too. They're all looking forward to bringing the new ideas to club runs over the next few weeks."  Helen Brooker, Coach in Running Fitness, Hatch Warren Running Club, Berkshire

The aim of the Club Run programme is to support road running clubs and their membership in achieving their desired goals. That could be anything from helping runners prepare for a marathon, improve their 10k PBs or age bests or shape a team for a road relay event or team championship competition. Clubs applying to Club Run will be able to decide what their focus is and discuss goals with their designated coach.

Following the application process, successful clubs are matched with an experienced coach and visits are arranged between the club and the coach.  Each participating club receives three consecutive visits within a three-month period, with the coach delivering three progressive sessions to help club runners work towards their goals leading up to a specific event. In between visits the runners, leaders and coaches are encouraged to work on some of the sessions ideas provided. Participating clubs will also have the opportunity for post session discussions around relevant topics such as fueling for race day or planning a structured training programme, for example.

Clubs whose main focus is on beginner running are encouraged to go to the RunTogether website as the Club Run programme primarily aims to support intermediate and advanced runners looking to improve their performance. RunTogether provides supporting tools for clubs and leaders helping runners start their running journey.
