City of Manchester National Champions!
City of Manchester Senior men (competing from the Club Sale Harriers) won the British Premier League (BAL) and secured the club’s third ever Premier League title and qualification for the European Cup ‘A’ Division next year.
With a four point margin of victory over Birchfield AC, it was a more convincing than was anticipated. Said team manager Dean Hardman, “It’s possibly the team's best ever performance in the 42 years of the club’s participation in the league and a better overall result than when the club last won the title 2007”. The team will now represent GB at the European Clubs' Cup ‘A’ Division next year and proudly reflect on the fact that Sale Harriers are officially the best club in the UK.
Earlier in the summer, the club’s senior women just missed out on their eleventh National Premier Title in twelve years. They surrendered the title to the same Birchfield AC who so closely challenged the men. Said women’s team manager Eric Hughes, “It’s a rare runner's up place for a squad who have the proud record of ten UK titles and two runne'rs up spots over the past twelve years.”
This weekend, the club’s under 13, 15 and 17 boys and girls contest the National Young Athletes Finals in Birmingham against the best eight teams from England, Scotland and Wales. They take their place as convincing winners of the Northern Young Athlete’s League Division. Likewise, the club’s under 17 and 20 squad of men and women challenge for the National Junior League Title the following week at Derby on September 11th. We wish both the best of luck.
Finally, congratulations to the club’s ‘B’ squad who became Northern Division 1 Champions for the first time since men and women’s teams were combined.
The Manchester Athletics Network wish to pass on their congratulations to the whole athlete and coaching team.
