Virgin Money London Marathon including England Athletics Marathon Championships

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed in the Virgin Money London Marathon and to the many club volunteers whose help enables this race to be held.

Winner of the individual men’s England title was Scott Overall (Club: Blackheath & Bromley, Coach: Alan Storey) whose 213:13 also saw him take 13th place in the elite race. Ian Kimpton (Club: Luton, Coach: Tony Simmons) ran 2:15:55 for silver and bronze went to Matty Hynes (Club: Gateshead, Coach: Stan Markley) who clocked 2:16:00.

In the women’s race Sonia Samuels (Club: Sale Harriers Manchester/ Loughborough Students, Coach: self) clocked 2:31:46. In silver medal position was Emma Stepto (Club: Cornwall, Coach: Alan Rowling) with 2:35:41 and bronze medallist was Rebecca Robinson (Club: Kendal) with 2:36:51.

The race also saw the swansong of Paula Radcliffe over marathon. Paula, who won England Athletics’ Athlete of the decade award in 2010 was making her last outing at the event where she first set a world record in 2002. Starting off the mass start she clocked 2:36:55.
