England Age Group Masters compete at Chester Marathon 2018

This coming weekend the MBNA Chester Marathon will host a team of around 170 runners England Age Group Masters runners who will don the specially designed England representative masters vest. Runners aged 35 through to 70+ years will take on a smaller Celtic Masters team which includes representatives from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man in this friendly, but competitive race over the challenging 26.2 miles race distance.

Over 150 affiliated England clubs are represented on the team with age group runners from the far reaches of Cornwall to the North East all gathering in Chester to run as one team. The runners represent a wide range of clubs from larger, established clubs with many of years of competition history as well as a number of newer clubs that started out as social running groups.

All of the England representatives had to qualify through one of the four qualifying marathon races that took place in Autumn 2017 and Spring 2018 and Sunday will be the culmination of several months of build-up to this event. Many of the team are also likely to be contesting for podium places in the race outright with last year’s race winners, Lloyd Biddell (Mercia Fell Runners) and Sarah Lowery (Sheffield RC) were both part of the Age Group Masters team and 2018 could well see a masters runner take the race title again.

England Athletics would like to congratulate all the Age Group Masters representatives in their selection and wish them the very best of luck for the Sunday.
