Bosworth sets second British Record in a week

Tom Bosworth (Tonbridge AC, Coach: Andi Drake) continued his perfect start to 2020 by setting his second British Record in a week when taking the England Athletics 10km Race Walking Championship title at Coventry.

Fresh from his British record-breaking exploits over 5,000m at Glasgow at the British Indoor Championships last weekend Bosworth set out to reclaim the record he lost to Callum Wilkinson last year (39.31). Bosworth set off in determined fashion in blustery conditions on the testing course on the University of Warwick Campus. He passed the 2km mark in 7.45 as he built up a commanding lead over training partner Cameron Corbishley (Medway & Maidstone AC, Coach: Andi Drake). He passed the halfway point in 19.42 just inside British Record pace. He walked a controlled race to take the victory in 19.10.

Bosworth said “Last week’s race indoors took a lot out of my legs, so I am really happy to back this up with another British Record over 10km. I am looking forward to seeing what I can do over 20km next month”. The runner up Cameron Corbishley set a new personal best of 40.59 which moves him up to 8th on the British All Time list. This is a fine performance as he builds towards a 50km in Dudince, Slovakia in 3 weeks' time which is the British Olympic Trials for 50km. Tom Partington (Manx Harriers, Steve Partington) took 3rd place in 44.43. Under 20, George Wilkinson (Enfield & Harringay AC, Mick Graham) set a new personal best of 46.47 to move to the top of the UK rankings for 2020. Luc Legon (Bexley AC, Noel Carmody) also set a personal best 46.39.

In the women’s race, the open 10km was won by Heather Lewis (Pembrokeshire Harriers, Chris Jones) in a new personal best of 45.14 which moves her to 4th on the UK All Time list. This sets her up well for her first 20km. Behind her Gemma Bridge (Oxford City AC, Mark Wall) was making a welcome return to racing and took the England title in 48.05. The England silver went to Abbigail Jennings (Aldershot, Verity Snook) in a new personal best of 52.26 with Natalie Myers (2DASH, Helen Elleker) taking the bronze in 55.38.
