Bosworth and Onuora named Team England co-captains for the 2018 Commonwealth Games

Tom Bosworth and Anyika Onuora have been named co-captains of the Team England athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold Coast.

Bosworth – competing in the 20km walk – and Onuora – part of the 4x400m relay team and the individual 400m – will lead the team of 92 who get underway on Sunday 8 April.

Both athletes have years of experience on international squads, and having both competed for England at a Commonwealth Games previously, they will bring their knowledge and understanding of the Games environment to the large squad.

Three-time Commonwealth medallist Onuora will compete in her third Games in Australia, having won a silver in the 4x100m in the country 12 years ago in Melbourne. A double relay medallist in Glasgow, Onuora brings great relay pedigree into these Games, but will also be targeting a strong performance in the individual 400m as well.

A delighted Onuora said:

“I am delighted and honoured to be given this role as Co-Captain of the England Athletics Team for the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.

“The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne was my very first championships as a senior athlete and played an important role at the start of my career. This will be my third Commonwealth Games so I hope I can be a source of inspiration to all team members, especially the newcomers.”

Bosworth was 11th in Delhi eight years ago, and since then he has finished 6th at the Olympic Games alongside setting a number of national records and a couple of world records over various walk distances.

The race-walker spoke about his captaincy:

“I am incredibly proud to have the honour of co-captaining the Team England athletics squad at these Games. My first experience of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 was actually my first senior major Games or championships, so it was the start of my journey in the sport which has led to so many memories over the last eight years, representing my country at European, World and Olympic level.

“I’m truly honoured to have the privilege to represent each athlete and every athletic event on this team at this year’s Commonwealth Games.”

Team Leader, Martin Rush commented upon the captain’s announcement:

“In Anyika and Tom, we have two outstanding individuals to captain our team. Not only do they have a wealth of major championships experience to draw on, but their personal qualities and the respect that they command from their teammates mean that they will be able to lead by example and give great support."

The first athletics action of the Commonwealth Games is on Sunday 8 April with Bosworth, Callum Wilkinson and Gemma Bridge competing in the 20km race walk events from 7am (10pm UK time).
